Zanthoxylum<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a\u00a0genus<\/a>\u00a0of about 250 species of\u00a0deciduous<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0evergreen<\/a>\u00a0trees, shrubs and climbers in the\u00a0family<\/a>\u00a0Rutaceae<\/a>\u00a0that are native to warm\u00a0temperate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0subtropical<\/a>\u00a0areas worldwide. It is the type genus of the tribe Zanthoxyleae in the subfamily\u00a0Rutoideae<\/a>. Several of the species have yellow heartwood, to which their generic name alludes.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/h6>\n

Plants in the genus\u00a0Zanthoxylum<\/i>\u00a0are shrubs, trees or woody climbers armed with\u00a0trichomes<\/a>. The leaves are arranged alternately and are usually\u00a0pinnate<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0trifoliate<\/a>. The flowers are usually arranged in\u00a0panicles<\/a>\u00a0and usually function as male or female flowers with four\u00a0sepals<\/a>\u00a0and four petals, the sepals remaining attached to the fruit. Male flowers have four\u00a0stamens<\/a>\u00a0opposite the sepals. Female flowers have up to five, more or less free\u00a0carpels<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a0styles<\/a>\u00a0free or sometimes fused near the tip. The fruit is usually of up to four\u00a0follicles<\/a>\u00a0fused at the base, each containing a single seed almost as large as the follicle.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/h6>\n

The genus\u00a0Zanthoxylum<\/i>\u00a0was first formally described in 1753 by\u00a0Carl Linnaeus<\/a>\u00a0in the first volume of\u00a0Species Plantarum<\/a><\/i>.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The generic name is derived from\u00a0Ancient Greek<\/a>\u00a0words\u00a0\u03be\u03b1\u03bd\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(xanthos<\/i>), meaning „yellow,” and\u00a0\u03be\u03cd\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(xylon<\/i>), meaning „wood.” It is technically misspelled, as the\u00a0z<\/i>\u00a0should be\u00a0x<\/i>, but botanical nomenclature does not allow for spelling corrections. It refers to a yellow dye made from the roots of some species.[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The first species that Linnaeus described was\u00a0Zanthoxylum trifoliatum<\/i>, now regarded as a\u00a0synonym<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Eleutherococcus trifoliatus<\/a><\/i>.[7]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The once separate genus\u00a0Fagara<\/i>\u00a0is now included in\u00a0Zanthoxylum<\/i>.[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/h6>\n
